Pre-Fall: Preparing Your Garden For Fall

In Virginia Beach, we are accustomed to the dense humidity of the summer months. We know how to take care of ourselves. When September begins, we are more than ready to embrace the first breeze of autumn. Most of the plants in our gardens feel the same way. While some plants thrive in the summer heat, others welcome the fall. However, you need to know how to care for them all throughout the changes in temperature, so I’m giving you some pre-fall gardening tips for the next few weeks!

You should start working on your fall vegetable garden in early September. Sow seeds of produce that flourish in autumn’s slightly cooler weather, such as radishes, spinach, lettuce, and kale.

If you love to decorate your home with beautiful seasonal plants (I always love the look of a seasonal splash of color!) then you should also begin putting together your fall-themed vases and pots. Mix eye-catching blooms with rustic foliage this fall. Think about combining annuals like violets with ornamental cabbage and kale. Purple is a rich, unique color of fall and is bound to inspire you. I also love the character that hanging ivy brings to a home.

Stay tuned for more pre-fall tips next week!
