“Nothing says home like the smell of baking.”

Christmas Cookies have been a part of Christmas since the medieval times. At a time when most families were not well off, people discovered that making cookies and sharing sweets was a great way to share gifts during the Christmas season. In many cultures Christmas was spent visiting friends and family. This tradition of visiting loved ones and bringing cookies continues today and has expanded. Since the 1930’s children have been leaving cookies on a tray with a glass of milk for Santa. Today there are also cookie exchanges, cookie baking parties, and friends sharing their favorite recipes, Cookie cutters were originally hung on trees as decorations until recipes appeared giving us a way to use them. General Mills has collected search data and concluded that the most popular Christmas cookie across the United States is the Peanut Butter Blossom! Do you love peanut butter cookies as much as me? Follow the recipe below:

Ingredients (yields about 3-4 dozen)

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

2/3 cup coconut sugar

1 egg

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 tsp baking powder

2/2 tsp salt

Hersey Kisses

Directions

  1. Place butter and peanut butter in a mixing bowl then mix
  2. Gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy
  3. Add egg and continue beating
  4. Shape dough into 1-inch balls
  5. Place balls 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheets
  6. Flatten cookies with a fork and place a Hersey Kiss in the middle of each cookie
  7. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes
  8. Let cool for 5 minutes

Putting together a tray of these is easy if you are visiting friends or family. You may want to add a few other varieties. Typically, it is suggested to have about five to seven varieties on a tray of cookies. This keeps it tempting but not overwhelming. Other popular Christmas cookies include sugar, gingerbread, and snowball.
